Camden, Maine Harbor in the Winter

Camden, Maine Harbor in the Winter

Maine was never the first place on my list to vacation being a 20 year old male. But after just coming back home from my second trip - this time traveling to Camden, Maine in December - I am currently planning my next visit.

The first visit I had there was a two week stay with family in Jefferson, Maine. Jefferson is located on the northern shore of Lake Damariscotta and about half an hour from Augusta, the capital of Maine.

It was a beautiful scenic relaxing spot to spend part of my summer. Every day I would start my day off with a run to the lake and swim in the cool waters. I had the convenience of shops ten minutes away in the town of Damariscotta, which backs up to the Atlantic ocean. I could have not asked for a better summer away from the stress of the outside world.

I have just now gotten back from my second trip where I spent Christmas with more family on the central coast of Camden, Maine. I thought it was only beautiful in the summer, boy was I wrong. Although this is a very popular spot in the summer, I did not have to worry about the crowds or the summer prices on this trip. Just about every shop I went in, and trust me there are alot, had everything in stock and discounted at this time of year.

Being from Iowa I had packed plenty of warm clothes, but was not disappointed when I found myself only having to wear a sweatshirt most of the time. Camden has the feel of a small town with all the smiles you would expect, but the amenities of a larger city with things like a Wal-Mart ten minutes away in Rockland.

I have been all over the world on vacation and this is by far my favorite place to visit. I personally cannot wait to see this beautiful area in spring and plan on booking my flight as soon as possible!

Traveling to Maine in December

Thanks for your story about Christmas in Camden, Rallie. Many people are under the impression that the only good time to visit Maine is either in the summer months, or during fall foliage - in late September and October. For warm weather activities and events, these are certainly the best times to visit Maine.

However, there are also a lot of things to do in Maine during the off-season. And as you said, during the winter you don't need to deal with crowds, and you can find discounts everywhere, including cheap prices at hotels, motels, inns and bed and breakfasts.

You mention how fun it was to be in a Maine coastal village in December. Inland is quite nice at this time of year also, as the state has some great mountains, which means there are quite a few ski resorts in Maine. With some of Maine's skiing within a reasonable drive from the coast, it's possible to enjoy the best of both worlds on a Maine winter vacation!

For anyone else planning a visit in December, keep in mind that the winter weather in Maine is typically very cold and more than likely you'll need warm clothing.

Thanks again for your story about traveling to Camden at Christmas!
