Sohier Park, York Maine
As you drive north along Route 1A, in York
Beach, Maine
you cannot help but notice Nubble Lighthouse
(officially, the Cape Neddick Light Station). It sits stately on
a small peninsula of land, jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean.
How
do you get there? Drive to Sohier
Park.
And since the
land on which the Cape Neddick Lighthouse sits is not accessible to the
public, that is as close as you will get.
However, Sohier offers spectacular views of this
famous York, Maine lighthouse and the buildings that sit adjacent to it
on
Nubble Rock, as well as panoramic vistas of the most popular strip of
coastline in York Beach...
...Long
Sands Beach. The park also provides free parking
year-round,
benches, restrooms, a telescope, and a small seasonal gift shop. Daily
hours are posted at the park entrance. If it is time for a
bite to eat while you are sightseeing at the Nubble, Fox's Lobster House Restaurant,
open seasonally, is nearby.
Sohier
Park History
The land that Sohier occupies was
donated
to the Town of York, Maine in 1929, by a Boston, Massachusetts lawyer
named William Davies Sohier.
According to nubblelight.org, William's father
purchased the parcel of
land years earlier to be used for fine duck hunting.
Today...
...the York Parks and Recreation Department is
responsible for the park's up-keep and maintenance, under the direction
of a park committee.
However, the park remains highly dependent on
community volunteers for its preservation, with funding
derived primarily from the volunteer-run Sohier Park Welcome
Center
Gift Shop.
Bi-annually, the park is host to a long-time York,
Maine tradition...
...the Lighting
of the Nubble. At Christmas
and then again for
Christmas in July, held during York
Week (from late July to early
August)...
...the Cape Neddick Lighthouse and each of the
buildings on Nubble Rock are
outlined in twinkling holiday lights.
Sohier Park Wedding Ceremony
If you are looking for a truly magnificent
backdrop for a Maine
wedding, this York park may be one of the best places to get married in
Maine.
Sitting adjacent to what is claimed to be the most
photographed lighthouse in the world...
...the park provides a wonderful
seaside setting for a wedding ceremony.
A few things to keep in mind if you want to get
married in Sohier Park...
Although the Town of York Parks and Recreations Department is happy to
have couples use the park for their special event, the park cannot be
reserved for weddings.
So, it is quite possible you won't be alone
when
exchanging vows.
Another thing to keep in mind...
...parking lot spaces
cannot be reserved or blocked off. If you are having a small
private wedding, this
probably won't be an issue. But for a larger gathering,
during the summer tourist
season, you
will likely need alternate parking plans.
