A friend's wedding in Vermont provided the perfect excuse for my wife and me to explore New England for a couple of days. This is a beautiful, tradition-rich region that is especially welcoming in the fall when we visited.
Our favorite location we visited happened to be the city we flew into:
Portland, Maine.
After renting a car at the airport, we had plenty of time to spare and decided to spend the day exploring the town.
The first thing we noticed about Portland was the hospitality of the locals.
I needed a suit alteration, and the owner of the first shop we visited went out of his way to help me out. He had me ready to look my best in just a few minutes, and even recommended his favorite
places to eat downtown.
We were blown away by the
sense of community and friendliness in Portland.
After our trip to the tailor, we drove into the downtown area.
Downtown Portland is incredible to say the least! Located right on the water, the place gives you a great feel for life in New England. Restaurants, shops, and hotels are all available for tourists to enjoy right in the heart of the city.
We walked onto a pier and spent time taking pictures of the incredible sights. After walking around the downtown area, we decided that we had to spend the night in such a beautiful place. We stayed at the Hilton located right in the heart of Portland. I highly recommend this hotel; with a great view, luxurious rooms, and an incredibly friendly staff.
After checking in, we decided to have dinner at one of the countless seafood
restaurants in Portland. Located on the water, we were able to have
fresh lobster that had just been brought in by the local fishermen that day. The meal was so good that we'll always remember it. After dinner we decided to go check out the
Shipyard Brewery that is unique to Portland. The beers were among the best I've ever sampled.
I would highly recommend a trip to the Shipyard on your visit. If you're looking for the perfect spot to vacation in New England, look no further than Portland, Maine. I guarantee you will not be disappointed and, like me, you will have a very difficult time leaving.
