is said that many years ago seafarers noticed something resembling
a set of owl's eyes - peering
out to sea from a piece
of land on Maine's Midcoast. Find that spot and you

Head, Maine.
Extending into Penobscot
Bay, this four mile peninsula is
centrally located along Maine's coast, making it an ideal place to stay
while on a Maine
coastal vacation, or an easy stop as you travel from the
north or the south. Either way, do

You can certainly take a quick drive around
Owl's Head Village, but if time permits, there are a couple of stops
that may be of interest. For starters...
The Owl's
Head Transportation Museum has what they say is "the
finest collection of pioneer-era aircraft
and automobiles in the world". With more than 100 historic
aircraft,
automobiles, bicycles, carriages, and engines on permanent display, you
are bound to find something of interest here.
Or, in the Owl's
Head Transportation Museum
Store that sells models, clothing, publications, and gift
items relating to the museum collections. Since the Owl's
Head museum and store are open year round,
with the exception
of a few major holidays, they are easy to visit. Their schedule

A few miles down the road...
Sitting atop a hill in Owl's
Head State Park,
overlooking the entrance to
Rockland Harbor, is the squat, 30 foot tower of the Owl's Head Lighthouse,
one of the most photographed of Maine lighthouses. Although
Owl's Head Light and
the keeper's house are not accessible to the public the lighthouse
grounds are, making this a perfect place for an afternoon picnic.
Between Memorial Day and Labor Day...
You might want to include a stop at the scenic Birch Point State Park,
overlooking Penobscot Bay, to picnic, swim, or fish at the crescent
shaped beach.
A seven mile drive north and you are
in...
Rockland - with plenty
to do - lots of shops, restaurants, museums,
windjammer
cruises,
sightseeing boats, and the Maine State Ferry that travels to the
islands of North Haven, Vinalhaven and Matinicus. Continue
up Route 1 for several miles further and you will find the
lovely towns of
Rockport
and Camden, Maine.
Twenty miles south of Owl's Head, Maine is the
tiny fishing village of Port
Clyde, where you can board the Monhegan
Boat Line, with year round service to Monhegan Island.
