Bull Moose in Maine
Our favorite place to take our son during the spring through early fall is the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray, Maine. It's just a short trip from Portland or Augusta and close to the highway. They have all manner of animals there that are found naturally in the Maine woods.
The park has everything from birds, including more owls than you can count and a rare bald eagle, turtles, deer, moose, black bears that you can feed, lynx, bobcats, skunks, badgers, fisher cats, a working fishery and just about any other creature you can think of. The mountain lion is my son's favorite and it is HUGE!
The Park also includes lots of activities that encourage visitors to learn more about these animals. Along with informative exhibit signs, there is a cabin where you can learn about what it's like to be a park ranger, a walking trail to learn about Maine native trees and plants, and an indoor activity center where you can work on activities like puzzles, learn to identify an animal by its tracks and even its scat!
One of my favorite parts of visiting the Maine Wildlife Park, is that it's reasonably priced (under $10 for adults and very cheap for the kiddies), gives discounts to groups and encourages you to bring picnic lunches. There is ample seating at picnic tables throughout the park and a covered area for hot, sunny days.
The park also has a snack shack and a gift shop where you'll find a decent variety of items for sale at a variety of price points.
The only thing I'd warn visitors is that the Park only takes cash at the entry gate, so for folks like me who typically only carry my debit card, you're going to want to swing into an ATM before you arrive. There is a corner store and gas station down the street does have an ATM if you forget.
Parking is free and you can see the park in its entirety in half a day. The Maine Wildlife Park in Gray, Maine a must see attraction for visitors to Maine!
