Five Islands Lobster Shack Maine

Are lobster buns and lobster rolls available in late May? Are the lobster shacks in Maine open then?

Liz's Reply...

Hi Kathie, You are in luck! Nearly all of the Maine lobster shacks will be open by late May, to coincide with Memorial Day weekend...

...the unofficial beginning of summer in New England.

However, even if you were to visit Maine at another time of year, finding a good Maine lobster roll would be easy.

Many Maine restaurants serve lobster rolls and lobster entrees year round. This is true not only in coastal areas, but also in interior sections of the state.

I wish I knew which Maine Maine vacation spots you plan to visit. I might be able to provide suggestions.

But in lieu of that...

...you may find the Maine Lobster Council website handy for finding great places to eat lobster in Maine (including Maine lobster shacks).

Their URL is www.lobsterfrommaine.com.

Under the header Visiting Maine is a link for Places to Eat/Buy Lobster. That link takes you to a web page that has an interactive map, broken down by Maine regions.

Once you select a region, you can either view the entire list, or search for a particular Maine town. Each listing indicates if it is...

...Eat In, Take Out, Fine Dining, Casual Dining. a Maine Lobster Shack, or Fish Market, as well as...

...what time of year the place is open. Also included is a Google locator map, a brief description of each restaurant, lobster shack or fish market. their phone number, and when applicable, a direct link to their website.

While doing research on your Maine trip, I imagine you have (or will) come across the names of what are often talked about as being some of the best lobster shacks in Maine, such as...

...Red's Eats in Wiscasset, Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster, South Freeport, Chauncey Creek in Kittery Point, Waterman's Beach Lobster in South Thomaston...

...the Five Island Lobster Co. in Georgetown, the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport, Barnacle Billy's in Ogunquit, or...

...The Lobster Shack Restaurant at Two Lights, Cape Elizabeth, ME, often referred to by visitors as the Portland, Maine lobster Shack.

However, even though these places all serve excellent Maine lobster rolls, don't let that stop you from doing your own exploring. Along Maine's 4,568 miles of coastline (and inland) are dozens of other hidden treasures.

You will be enjoying your lobster bun at a beautiful time of year in the Northeast..

Late spring can be an awesome season to visit Maine. For several reasons it is actually considered by many travelers to be the best time to visit Maine.

The weather in Maine in May (particularly late May) is much warmer than in previous months, but still very comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities (although be aware of coastal fog)...

...summer tourist season has not arrived, which means few, or no crowds...

...many popular Maine tourist attractions, even those that are only open seasonally, are once again welcoming visitors.

And, because May in Maine is not considered high-season, you will find much cheaper rates at bed and breakfasts, inns, hotels and motels than during summer months. Although...

...if you are visiting Maine Memorial Day weekend, you are likely to find room rates somewhat elevated.

Lobster Rolls Yarmouth, Maine
by: Kimberly

We visited Maine in July of 2010 and had a delicious lobster roll in a small restaurant in Portland (I think). It was almost across from the welcome center on 295 and there was another place just up the road and around the corner on the water.

Both were very good. We do not remember the names, but are wanting more and will like to ride up from New Jersey to get another lobster roll. Trying to find out if they are open now in November. We will be coming about November 8th.

Hi Kimberly, I know exactly where you are talking about. As a matter of fact, just last week I was at the Maine Welcome Center, off 295...

...which is at Exit 17, to U.S. Route 1 in Yarmouth, around 15 to 20 minutes north of Portland.

Although there are a number of places to eat lobster along that stretch of Route 1, as it makes its way to Freeport, two popular places to have lobster rolls in Yarmouth, Maine that I think you might be mentioning are...

...Day's Crabmeat and Lobster at 1269 Route 1 in Yarmouth and...

...the Muddy Rudder at 1335 Route 1 in Yarmouth.

Day's Lobster is a quintessential Maine lobster pound, with take-out food and outside dining overlooking Cousins River.

Whereas, the Muddy Rudder - the Rudder, as it is affectionately known to locals - is a full service restaurant, with a seafood bar, appetizer's. soups, salads and a wide variety of entrees. Could either of these be where you had your memorable Maine lobster rolls?

If so, you are in luck, as the Muddy Rudder is open year-round. However, Day's Lobster Pound is seasonal and is not open past late October.

Like Day's, many of the small Maine lobster shacks are open only during the busiest tourist season...

...some not coming to life until as late as Memorial Day weekend, or in some cases early June, and then shutting down again in September or October. But this does not mean that you won't find awesome lobster in Maine in November.

In Maine coastal areas, in particular, lobster rolls and other lobster meat entrees are common place on the menu of most year-round restaurants.

As I mentioned to Kathie (please see above post), who asked about Maine lobster rolls in May...

...the Maine Lobster Council website at www.lobsterfrommaine.com has great information on where and when to Eat Maine Lobster (under the Buy Lobster link).

I hope this helps you find and excellent lobster roll in Yarmouth, Maine, or wherever else your travels take you, and that you have a fun trip.

The Maine weather forecast for the upcoming week (at this writing anyway) is for fantastic weather...

...I am planning on taking advantage of it myself and spending some time along the coast.
