Maine Lobster Roll Recipes

What is the best lobster roll recipe from Maine? You will need to make that decision for yourself. But one thing is for sure...

...if you have an opportunity to make your own lobster roll, you are likely to enjoy it immensely no matter which recipe for lobster rolls you use.

However, before you start you may appreciate a few lobster roll tips, from one who has prepared quit a few lobster rolls, and lobster sandwiches, over a lifetime.

Lobster Roll

Maine's Best Lobster Rolls

When preparing lobster roll recipes, I suggest using either live, fresh Maine lobster...

...or other live, cold-water lobster. If needed, frozen lobster tails, or frozen canned lobster meat, may be used, but keep in mind...

...the texture of lobster meat from a can is not as firm as that of fresh live lobsters, or frozen lobster tails, AND the meat tends to be a bit salty.

Learning how to cook lobster - in particular how to steam lobster, as you will need to do to prepare a lobster roll - should not be an intimidating process. As a matter of fact, it is the easiest way to prepare lobster.

Lobster Roll Chowder and ColeslawEach Maine lobster roll recipe shown here calls for frankfurter buns. However, any split top roll, medium size hamburg roll, or bread of your choice, may be used.

But be careful...

A dense or strong tasting bread or roll can easily overpower the decadent taste of your lobster meat and accompanying ingredients.

My favorite! A hot lobster roll served with LOTS of melted butter. And it is by far one of the easiest lobster roll recipes to make. Although this is a warm lobster roll you can cook the lobster ahead of time, and refrigerate the meat from the shell.

Simply reheat the lobster meat when you are ready to eat. I melt butter in a saucepan and place room temperature lobster meat into the liquid, heating it slowly over low to medium temperature, until warm.

Servings: 1
Preparation Time: 10 minutes (not including lobster steaming time)

Ingredients:

1 1-1/4 to 1 1/2 pound lobster
1/2 stick of butter
1 top-split hot dog roll
Lemon wedge

Preparation:

  1. Steam lobster and remove the meat from the shell (claws, knuckles and tail). Cut the meat into bite size chunks.
  2. While the lobster is steaming melt enough butter for approximately 1/4 cup of melted butter per lobster roll.
  3. Lightly butter the outside of a hot dog bun and grill in a skillet until golden brown.
  4. Place lobster meat inside the grilled hot dog bun. Pour melted butter into a small bowl and serve alongside the roll.
  5. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Some people prefer to add butter to the lobster meat before putting it into the hot dog roll. Doing so can cause the roll to become soggy and/or begin to fall apart, thus my suggestion to serve butter on the side.

I typically drizzle a small amount of butter on my lobster sandwich before I begin, and then break off small chunks and dip them into the butter, as I make my way through my decadent feast.

This classic Maine lobster roll recipe, on the menu in many of Maine's best seafood restaurants, uses chilled lobster meat, with only enough mayonnaise added to moisten the meat and add a small amount of flavoring.

Servings: 1
Preparation Time: 10 minutes (not including lobster steaming time)

Ingredients:

1 1-1/4 to 1 1/2 pound lobster
1 tablespoon butter
Mayonnaise to taste
1 top-split hot dog roll

Preparation:

  1. Steam lobster ahead of time and remove the meat from the shell (claws, knuckles and tail). Cut the meat into bite size pieces and chill.
  2. When ready to prepare lobster rolls, add mayonnaise to the lobster meat, using barely enough to taste.
  3. Lightly butter the outside of a hot dog bun and grill in a skillet until golden brown.
  4. Place lobster meat inside the grilled hot dog bun.
  5. If desired, place a small amount of shredded lettuce underneath the lobster meat.

A lobster salad roll recipe is very similar to the recipe for a classic Maine lobster roll. The only difference being that celery, scallions, paprika, or other ingredients may be added for flavor. However, be very careful when adding ingredients, as they can easily diminish the taste of your lobster.

Servings: 4
Preparation Time: 15 minutes (not including lobster steaming time)

Ingredients:

3 or 4 1-1/4 to 1 1/2 pound lobster
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup finely diced celery
3 tablespoons minced scallions
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley leaves
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice and several dashes of Tabasco Sauce
4 top-split hot dog rolls
Butter for grilling hot do rolls

Preparation:

  1. Steam lobster ahead of time and remove the meat from the shell (claws, knuckles and tail). Cut the meat into bite size pieces and chill.
  2. In a bowl, combine lobster, celery, scallions and parsley.
  3. In another bowl blend mayonnaise, lemon juice, Tabasco Sauce and pepper. Combine with lobster mixture.
  4. Lightly butter the outside of the hot dog buns and grill them in a skillet until golden brown.
  5. Place lobster salad meat inside the grilled hot dog bun.

For traditional lobster roll side dishes, you may want to serve...

...a cup of New England Clam Chowder, homemade coleslaw, hand-cut French fries, or a fresh fruit salad, and for a desert to accompany lobster roll recipes...

...a luscious wild Maine blueberry pie, of course - just as though you were enjoying one of those great Maine vacations!
