When is a good time to visit Portland, Maine, August or September?

Hi Ed! Actually, both August and September are a good time to visit Portland, Maine. However, at that time of year, this historic port city can feel distinctly different from one month to the next.
Portland, Maine in August...
...with the summer tourist season still in full swing, has a wonderful vibrancy. Many families are still taking Maine vacations (their last hurrah before the school year begins!)...
...and people who prefer warmer weather enjoy an average daily high temperature of 77 degrees in August, versus an average high of 69 degrees, the following month.
The difference in temperature can be of particular importance if you are planning to venture out into Casco Bay on a sightseeing cruise, or fishing trip.
Portland, Maine in September...
...has a low-key, very relaxed feeling. But, don't be fooled - there are still lots of things to do as summer gives way to fall.
Although some of Portland's summer tourist attractions may have limited hours and offerings after Labor Day weekend (early September), many remain open through Columbus Day weekend (early October).
Also, because Portland is Maine's largest city...
...nearly all of its shops, restaurants, art galleries, museums and lodging accommodations are open year-round. You will also find lots of cultural activities and events taking place throughout the city, regardless of the time of year you visit.
And, because of its central location...
...Portland, Maine is a great place from which to take day trips. After Labor Day, it is particularly quick and easy to drive to nearby cities, towns and villages.
Freeport, Bailey Island, Boothbay Harbor, Rockland, Camden and Port Clyde are all wonderful places to visit along the coast of Maine.
Another advantage to visiting Portland, Maine in September...
...many hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts and Portland vacation rentals have lower prices after Labor Day. As a matter of fact, depending on how lodging reservations are for late August and early September, you may find discounts at that time, as well.
Since Portland is such a great city to visit...
...my guess is that no matter when you go, you will leave feeling that it was definitely a good time to visit Portland, Maine!
Best regards,
Liz
