Mountain Views from Fryeburg, Maine
My family and I have spent several summer vacations in the White Mountains, from Twin Mountain to North Conway, New Hampshire. This past summer we decided to travel further east and vacationed in the town of Fryeburg, Maine. In addition to the fabulous hiking and scenic byways we have come to expect, we were treated to an historic New England town.
We stayed at the Olde Saco Inn Bed and Breakfast, in Fryeburg, just east and north of town on Route 5. The common area reminded us of our trip to Walt Disney World's Wilderness Lodge, except this was the real thing!

The girls loved the goats and the dogs, as well as climbing into the tree house. The grown-ups liked the wrap around porch and the big fireplace.
In town, we spent a day wandering through the
historic Fryeburg neighborhoods and had lunch at a local pizza joint. It was a lot different than the tourist stores in Conway- more like a stroll through a lovely town.
Another day, we hiked in the
Speckled Mountain region, and included a picnic lunch at this gorgeous meadow area a short walk from the parking lot. We have seen the views from Mount Washington in New Hampshire, but the views of Mount Washington from the top of Speckled Mountain were just as nice.
Our inn had kayaks available for guests, so one morning the whole family took a trip down the Saco River. I convinced my husband to take the Grafton Notch Byway at dusk, mostly because the girls dawdled at a swimming hole. We saw two moose! In past vacations we have seen few moose, mostly because my husband is very hesitant to drive when and where it is the best to see them.
I am glad we ventured into this new area in a region our family loves!
