Charlie Beiggs Restaurant, Windham, ME
From the reviews I have
read, it is for good reason that the Charlie Beiggs Restaurant,
in Windham, Maine, was voted in the 2009
Independent Business Awards - sponsored by Independent Publishing of
the Sebago Lakes Region...
...as the "Favorite
Overall Restaurant". But the accolades don't
stop there.
The Windham,
Maine restaurant was also named #1 for Best Burger
and Fries, and #1
for Best Happy Hour. The #1 spot for Best Seafood could have been
theirs also, but with Bob's Seafood Restaurant in the competition, they
had
to settle for #2!

Independently owned and operated by the husband
and wife team of Tony Barner and Clare Amrhein, Charlie Beiggs
Restaurant and Firehouse Tavern offers...
...Early Bird specials, a Kid's menu, Lunch and
Dinner menus, with a "variety of fresh seafood and hand cut
steaks that are aged to their peak of tenderness", and for special
occasions, a full Banquet menu.
Amidst tell tale signs of the North Windham Fire
Station that once
occupied this 1934 building, flame grilled Firehouse Burgers...
...such as the Three Alarm, served with jalapenos,
pepper jack cheese and
buffalo sauce, The Chief, creatively topped with crab meat and Swiss
cheese. and the False Alarm, a vegetarian black bean burger,
with lettuce and tomato...
...as well as soups, salads, sandwiches and
expertly prepared meals, are served in the casual dining room, the
tavern, and weather
permitting, on the outside deck.
Who
is Charlie? Well, as far
as I know that remains a mystery. But, according to the
restaurant's website...
...two other restaurants, Ronzi's Fire Barn
and
Horsefeathers
at the Crossing, previously occupied this building.
A gentleman named Brian Stevens took over Horsefeathers,
giving the restaurant its current name. Rumor has it that
Brian named it after someone he knew in the service - and so the legend
goes.
