Camping in Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park
in Maine is not only an awesome destination for a day
trip, but it can also a wonderful spot to spend the night.
Camping in
Acadia
National Park can be found in four locations...
...Blackwoods Campground, Seawall Campground, Duck
Harbor Campground, and Wildwood Stables.
Blackwoods
and Seawall
Campgrounds are the two largest, and
are both
located on Mount Desert Island, as is the Wildwood Stables
camping
area. However, Wildwood Stables caters only to people who are looking
for accommodations for both themselves AND their horses!
Duck
Harbor Campground, although still an Acadia
National Park, is
remote and primitive on Isle
au Haut and accessible
only by boat.
Mount Desert Campground - Acadia National Park
Camping in Acadia National Park does not include
backcountry camping, or waterfront campsites, but instead provides
other peaceful settings for an overnight stay.
The campsites at Blackwoods
Campground and Seawall
Campground. the primary Acadia National Park camping areas, are all
wooded and within a ten minute walk of the ocean. Although
most sites are designed for small to large size tents, pop-ups, vehicle
campers,
and RVs up to 35 feet, can be accommodated at others.
Both facilities,
located at an Island Explorer Shuttle Bus stop, offer...
...restrooms with running water, nearby seasonal
showers (fee required), evening campfire programs, accessible sites,
and group reservations. There are no
hookups or utilities at either campground.
Campsite regulations
include...
...no more than two tents and one vehicle per
campsite, tents must fit within provided
tent pads, party size is limited to six people per site - although the
number may be
exceeded to allow for one more immediate family member (parent or
child), and limitations on recreational vehicle size.
Blackwoods
Campground, with 306 campsites...
...is located off Route 3, five miles south of Bar
Harbor. Year round camping is available at Blackwoods
Campground with reservations strongly suggested between May 1 to
October 31. Reservations may be made up to six months in
advance.
Therefore, if you are
interested in camping in Acadia National Park's Blackwoods Campground
on July 4th you can make reservations as early as January 4th.
Weather permitting, the campground is open during
the shoulder seasons of April and November. And in the
off-season, December 1 through March 31, primitive
camping is available at a limited number of campsites. The
campground entrance road is closed to automobiles during this period,
making it necessary for winter camping enthusiasts to hike to their
campsites.
Seawall
Campground, with 214 campsites...
...is off Route 102A, four miles south of
Southwest Harbor. Open from late May through
September 30th, the campground takes reservations, but only for a
portion
of its campsites. Nearly half of the sites are maintained on
a first come, first serve basis.
Wildwood
Stables camping...
...is operated through Carriages
of Acadia,
the same concessioner who provides horse-drawn Acadia
Park carriage tours along miles of trails and roads, built nearly a
century ago by John D. Rockefeller Jr.
Providing for camping in Acadia
National Park with your horse...
...the stables are located just off the scenic
Park
Loop Road - around one-half mile south of the Jordan Pond House
Restaurant.
