Activities and Events in Maine
With a land mass encompassing 33,215 square miles,
from the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, westward and northward to some of
New England's prettiest mountain peaks, there is an endless list of
activities
and events in Maine...
...a list of fun things to do for
absolutely every interest, and every age group.
What are the best
things to do in Maine?
You will need to decide that yourself. But, to give
you ideas of where to go and what to do in Maine...
...I've started putting together monthly lists of
some of the more popular events and activities around the state.
Do
you sponsor events in Maine, or know of one that should be included?
Please feel free to fill out the form at the
bottom of the page and I will be happy to add the event to the
appropriate
section of Activities and Events in Maine.
Monthly Things to do in Maine
In every one of the Maine
vacation spots
- Southern Maine, Greater
Portland and Casco Bay, Midcoast Maine, Downeast and Acadia, the
Western Lakes and Mountains, the Kennebec and Moose River Valleys, and
the Katahdin Moosehead region...
...you can find unique things to do. And the best part may be
that there are plenty of FREE activities and events in Maine, and the
ones that are not free - for the most part - are relatively cheap
things to do.
January
Activities
- Winter Fests, Winter Carnivals, and Snow Fests, with horse and wagon
rides, bonfires, snowmobile races, ice fishing derbies, ice carvings
and
ice skating are the way to beat the winter blues. However,
since the cold and snow are not for everyone, there are many indoor
activities in Maine in January. You
will
find plenty of film festivals, musicals, concerts, and art shows and
museum exhibits
February
Activities
- Winter celebrations continue from seaside villages to Maine's ski
resorts. Special Valentine's Day, Martin Luther King's
Birthday, President's Day, Mardi Gras, and February school vacation
events and
activities are plentiful indoors and out - as are a large number of
decadent chocolate
festivals!
March
Activities - Maine Restaurant Week, Dog sled races, St.
Patrick's Day celebrations, Irish heritage festivals, boat shows,
Maine Maple
Sunday, the first Spring Fling (and Easter events, if it is a
year when it falls early) are a sure sign that winter is
almost over.
April
- Patriot's Day and Earth Day, Spring fairs, craft exhibits, and
antique
shows, herald in the warmer weather. April is also the month
for the annual
Fishermen's Festival in Boothbay
Harbor,
and the "biggest spring party
in the East", the Reggae Festival, at Sugarloaf Mountain.
May
- The month begins with the Cinco de Mayo celebrations and draws to a
close with dozens of Memorial Day events.
Birding festivals and lilac
festivals, along with many art, antique, and car shows, are ongoing
throughout the month.
June
- With strawberry festivals and Windjammer Day's, summer cannot be far
off. Family festivals, kid's carnivals, summertime fairs, and
sidewalk arts shows, are happening in almost every Maine region.
July
- The 4th of July events and Independence Day celebrations offer a
great kick-off to summer in Maine! Fireworks, concerts,
street fairs, the Maine Potato Blossom Festival, the Maine Windjammer
Parade, Yarmouth Clam Festival, and Casco Days, are all good reason to
visit
Maine
in July.
August
- Beginning on the Wednesday before the first
FULL weekend in August, tourists from around the world show up in
Rockland, Maine
for its annual Lobster
Festival. And, lobster fests are just the beginning
of things to
do in Maine in August.
The Bangor State Fair, the Northern Maine Fair,
and York Days and the Lighting
of the Nubble may begin late in July, but are still in full
swing during the beginning of August. You will also have...
...the Topsham Fair, the Skowhegan Fair, and the
Maine Boats, Homes and Harbor Show, hot air balloon fests and dozens of
blueberry festivals, to keep you busy.
September
- Activities and events in Maine don't end on Labor Day. The
month begins with the Camden Windjammer Festival and continues on with
the Acadia Night Sky Festival, the Farmington Fair, the Cumberland
Fair, the Oxford County Fair, and many other local festivals that mark
the end of another summer in Maine!
October
- Maine's largest agricultural fair, the Fryeburg Fair,
takes place
just as fall foliage in Maine begins to peak. In almost every
Maine town, big or small, you will find Harvest Festivals, Pumpkin
Fests, and Halloween
Events, with parades, pie eating contests, pumpkin decorating
competitions,
ghost stories, live music, and children's activities.
November
- The month may begin slowly, but Thanksgiving weekend is usually
filled with activity that marks the beginning of the December holiday
season. Tree lighting ceremonies, holiday craft fairs, and
Christmas shopping events, begin to take place in many towns and cities
in
Maine.
December
- More Christmas fairs and bizarres, holiday food and
craft shows, Santa parades, and holiday plays and musicals, are among
the
annual December activities and events in Maine.
